Carbide burrs for sculpture, carving & artistic metalwork
Sculptors and metal artists work at the intersection of precision and creativity — demanding tools that respond exactly to their intent, hold their edge through hours of detail work, and perform equally on steel, bronze, aluminum, stone, and hardwood. Our sculpture-grade carbide burrs are USA-manufactured from solid tungsten carbide to give artists the cutting accuracy and consistency that industrial-purpose burrs compromise on.

Key features & benefits
Precision cutting for fine detail
Tight tolerances and sharp flute geometry give sculptors precise material control for intricate surface textures and fine detail work.
Works on all sculpture materials
Solid carbide handles steel, bronze, aluminum, hardwood, and soft stone — one tool family for your complete material range.
Edge retention for long sessions
Solid tungsten carbide holds its edge through extended detail sessions — no need to stop and replace tools mid-work.
Full shape range for any form
Ball, flame, cylinder, oval, tree, taper, and specialty shapes — every geometry needed for organic forms, sharp lines, and surface textures.
1/4" & 1/8" shank options
Both standard 1/4-inch and fine 1/8-inch shanks available — 1/8-inch for delicate detail work with smaller rotary tools.
Wholesale artist pricing
Factory-direct pricing for working artists — professional quality without paying distributor markups.

Safety guidelines
Stone & wood dust are respiratory hazards
Fine dust from stone carving and wood sculpture is a serious long-term respiratory risk. Always use a P100 respirator and work in a well-ventilated space. Studio ventilation with dust extraction is strongly recommended for daily use.
Match cut style to material
Using double-cut burrs on bronze or hardwood clogs the flutes and causes dangerous grabbing. Always match the cut style to the material: aluma-cut for bronze, wood, and aluminum; double cut for steel and iron.
Eye protection on all carving operations
Chips and fragments from metal, stone, and hardwood eject unpredictably during carving. Always wear safety glasses or a face shield — even on fine detail passes with small 1/8-inch shank burrs.
Secure sculpture workpiece
Secure your work in a vice, clamp, or non-slip surface before starting. Even lightweight pieces can shift unpredictably when a burr catches — never carve freehand on an unsecured piece.
Use light touch on detail passes
Carbide burrs remove material quickly. On fine sculpture detail, use very light pressure and short passes — it is always possible to remove more material, but impossible to replace what has been removed.
Eye & hearing protection always
Wear safety glasses and hearing protection on all sessions regardless of duration.
Best for creating flowing transitions between sculptural planes
Cylinder (A series)
Cylindrical
Sharp edges, flat planes, geometric forms, text
Essential for clean geometric lines and lettered relief work
Tree (F series)
Tree / tapered
Deep recesses, undercuts, fine line texture
Best for creating deep relief lines and textural detail
Oval (E series)
Oval / egg
Smooth shallow relief, blending between forms
Ideal for blending and smoothing between sculptural elements
Inverted cone
Inverted cone (N)
Undercut work, dovetail grooves, shadow lines
Creates deep shadow lines and undercutting in relief work
Frequently asked questions
Which cut style should I use for metal sculpture vs wood?
For steel and iron sculpture, double cut is the standard choice — it removes material efficiently across the full range of metal sculpture techniques from rough shaping to surface texturing. For bronze, brass, and aluminum sculpture, use aluma-cut to prevent chip packing that causes grabbing and loss of control on soft metals. For hardwood carving, aluma-cut also works best — the open flutes clear wood fibers cleanly and prevent burning on dense hardwoods.
Do you offer 1/8-inch shank burrs for fine detail sculpture work?
Yes. We offer sculpture carbide burrs in 1/8-inch shanks for use with Foredom flex shaft machines, Dremel-type rotary tools, and precision die grinders. The 1/8-inch shank range includes ball, flame, cylinder, and tree shapes — the most commonly needed geometries for fine detail and texture work on small to medium sculpture. Contact us for full 1/8-inch shape availability.
Can carbide burrs be used on ceramic or kiln-fired sculpture?
Carbide burrs can be used on greenware and bisque-fired ceramic with reasonable effectiveness, though the abrasive nature of ceramic reduces bur life quickly. On fully vitrified or high-fired ceramics, the material hardness approaches that of the carbide itself — results vary significantly by ceramic type and firing temperature. For regular ceramic sculpture work, diamond-coated burrs are typically more effective. Contact our team to discuss your specific ceramic application.
