Drag Cut carbide burrs – hi-helix smooth finish cutting

When your job demands a smooth finish rather than raw stock removal — weld prep, surface blending, edge finishing — a standard double-cut burr leaves too rough a surface. Drag Cut burrs use a 55-degree hi-helix single flute that slices cleanly through steel and non-ferrous metals in a single dragging action, leaving a consistently smooth surface finish with far less vibration than conventional cut styles.

Key features & benefits
55° hi-helix single flute
High helix angle creates a slicing, dragging cut that produces a significantly smoother surface finish than standard cut styles on every pass.
Minimal vibration & chatter
Hi-helix geometry virtually eliminates the harmonic chatter that causes hand fatigue and rough surfaces with standard cut burrs.
Runs cooler than double cut
Single wide flute evacuates heat and chips continuously — the workpiece surface stays cooler for a cleaner finish.
Works on steel & non-ferrous
Effective on mild steel, stainless, aluminum, and soft metals — one burr for finish work across your full material range.
Extended 6" shank available
Extended shank Drag Cut burrs for weld prep and finishing in deep joints, structural sections, and hard-to-reach areas.
Wholesale direct pricing
Factory-direct pricing from our USA facility — no distributor markup on Drag Cut specialty tooling.

Safety guidelines
Drag Cut is for finishing, not bulk removal
Applying heavy cutting pressure on Drag Cut burrs — treating them like a coarse double-cut — overloads the single hi-helix flute and causes premature edge failure. Use light, consistent passes for finishing work.
Direction of cut matters
The hi-helix geometry is optimised for a specific cutting direction. Running the burr in the wrong rotation direction produces a rubbing action rather than a cutting action — check your grinder rotation before starting.
Full face shield required
Even on finishing passes, fine metal chips eject at high velocity. Always wear a full face shield — safety glasses alone are not adequate for die grinder operations.
Match RPM to application
Drag Cut burrs produce their best finish at moderate RPM. Excessive speed on finishing passes creates a burnishing action rather than a clean cut — stay within the recommended RPM range for your head diameter.
Secure thin sheet before finishing
While Drag Cut produces low vibration, thin sheet metal can still resonate under the burr. Clamp thin gauge work firmly to prevent sheet movement and ensure a consistent finish.
Eye & hearing protection always
Wear safety glasses and hearing protection on all grinding and finishing operations regardless of duration.
Best shapes for finish work

Smoothest finish on curved internal surface transitions
Frequently asked questions
What makes the Drag Cut different from a standard single-cut burr?
A standard single-cut burr has a low to moderate helix angle — typically 10 to 20 degrees — which produces a moderate cutting action and a moderately rough finish. The Drag Cut uses a 55-degree hi-helix angle, which means the flute is almost axial relative to the workpiece. This extreme angle creates a true slicing or dragging action rather than a scraping action, which is why it produces a dramatically smoother surface finish with far less vibration than any standard single or double-cut burr.
Can Drag Cut burrs be used for initial weld removal before finishing?
Drag Cut is optimised for finishing and blending rather than heavy weld removal. For significant weld bead removal, start with a double-cut or Krazy Kut burr to remove the bulk of the material, then switch to Drag Cut for the final finishing passes. Using Drag Cut for heavy removal overloads the hi-helix flute and shortens tool life significantly. Think of it as your finishing tool — not your roughing tool.
Are Drag Cut burrs available with an extended shank?
Yes. Drag Cut burrs are available with 6-inch extended steel shanks for weld prep and finishing in deep structural sections, box beams, and other areas where a standard 2-inch shank cannot reach. Contact us at 1-800-645-1679 to confirm shape and diameter availability for extended shank Drag Cut burrs, as not all shapes are stocked in extended lengths at all times.
