Extended shank H Series flame shape – deep port finishing & long passage contouring

The Extended Shank H Series flame shape extends the narrow teardrop geometry to 6-inch depth — reaching deep cylinder head port passages, long diesel and marine engine passages, internal casting curved surfaces, and any confined curved area where a standard shank flame shape cannot position from the grinder entry point. The narrow teardrop profile accesses tighter passages at depth than the D Series ball while delivering longer, smoother finishing strokes along passage walls.

Key features & benefits
6-inch extended reach shank
Extends flame shape contouring to 6 inches from the collet — finishing port walls, curved passage surfaces, and internal contouring deep inside long engine and structural passages.
Narrow teardrop at depth
Narrower profile than the D Series ball — accesses tighter passage zones at extended depth while still delivering curved surface contouring and port wall finishing capability.
Solid tungsten carbide head
USA-manufactured solid carbide — consistent edge integrity across the full flame profile at 6-inch extended reach depth for extended porting sessions.
Deep port wall finishing at reach
After D Series ball rough work at depth, the extended shank flame finishes port walls at full passage depth — smoothing ball marks and blending port wall transitions the full length of the passage.
Double cut & aluma-cut
Double cut for cast iron and steel deep port finishing. Aluma-cut for aluminum head port wall finishing and manifold passage contouring at 6-inch extended depth.

Safety guidelines
Reduce RPM 20–30% and do not force into passages narrower than the widest point
Reduce RPM by 20 to 30 percent versus standard shank settings. At extended reach, never push the flame shape into a passage narrower than its widest diameter — the widening mid-section will bind inside the passage and the 6-inch shank will amplify the sudden grab force significantly. Always confirm passage width against flame diameter before entering at depth.
Use aluma-cut for all aluminum deep port work
At 6-inch extended reach inside an aluminum port, a double-cut flame packing with chips is especially dangerous — packed chips can trap the shank inside the port on withdrawal. Always use aluma-cut for all aluminum head and manifold deep port and passage work with extended shank flame burrs.
Full face shield required
Deep passage finishing operations eject chips from the passage entry in concentrated streams. A full face shield is mandatory for all extended shank H Series operations.
Keep tool moving — never dwell at depth
Keep the flame shape in continuous motion at all times during deep passage work. Dwelling at depth inside a port causes localised heat buildup and concentrated chip packing — both more serious at 6-inch extended reach than at standard shank depth.
Inspect shank before every use
Inspect the full 6-inch shank for cracks, bends, or surface marks before every use. Discard any damaged shank immediately.
Secure head or workpiece before deep work
Always secure cylinder heads and castings firmly in a bench vice before starting extended shank deep port and passage finishing. An unsecured workpiece at 6-inch depth is extremely dangerous.

Frequently asked questions
What is the recommended tool sequence for full-depth diesel head port work using extended shank burrs?
For full-depth diesel and marine head port work, the most effective extended shank sequence is: first, use the extended shank D Series ball (SD-3 XS or SD-4 XS depending on port size) for rough material removal, opening the port volume and blending the bowl area at full passage depth. Second, use the extended shank H Series flame (SH-5 XS for most diesel port sizes) to make finishing passes along the port walls at full depth, smoothing the ball tool marks and blending the port wall transitions the full length of the passage. For iron diesel heads use double-cut throughout. For aluminum marine heads, use aluma-cut for both the ball and the flame extended shank at full depth.
Why use the extended shank flame instead of the extended shank oval for deep port finishing?
The extended shank flame shape and extended shank oval are both finishing tools at depth, but their geometry suits different applications. The flame (teardrop) shape is asymmetric — widest in the middle and tapered to a point at the top — allowing the pointed tip to work in tight upper port passage areas that the oval tip cannot access as precisely. The oval is symmetric and produces longer, more even strokes across gentle curved surfaces. For port wall finishing where the passage narrows toward the roof, the flame handles the transition zone better. For broad, consistent surface blending on port walls that are uniformly curved, the oval produces a slightly more even finish. Many engine builders keep both extended shank shapes on hand and use each where it suits.
Is the extended shank H Series flame available in aluma-cut for deep aluminum port finishing?
Yes. Extended shank H Series flame burrs are available in aluma-cut geometry for deep aluminum head port wall finishing and manifold passage contouring at full reach. The aluma-cut extended shank flame is the correct tool for the finishing pass on aluminum head ports at depth — the open flutes clear aluminum chips continuously through the full length of the finishing stroke at 6-inch reach.
