Aluma-Cut carbide burrs – engineered for aluminum & soft metals

Standard double-cut burrs on aluminum, brass, or copper pack with chips within seconds — the material loads the fine flutes, the burr stops cutting, and then grabs. Aluma-Cut solves this with an open single-cut geometry specifically designed for soft and non-ferrous metals. The wide, raked flutes shear aluminum cleanly and eject chips continuously, so the burr keeps cutting pass after pass without loading, grabbing, or heat buildup.

Key features & benefits
Open single-cut geometry
Wide, raked flutes designed specifically for soft metals — shear aluminum cleanly and eject chips continuously without the packing that cripples double-cut burrs on non-ferrous materials.
No heat buildup in aluminum
Efficient chip evacuation keeps the cutting zone cool — prevents the surface discoloration, smearing, and workpiece distortion that heat causes on aluminum.
No grabbing or snatching
Loaded flutes on soft metals cause sudden grabbing that pulls the tool into the work. Aluma-Cut eliminates this hazard entirely with geometry that prevents chip accumulation.
Solid tungsten carbide
USA-manufactured solid carbide throughout — holds the sharp edge that soft metal work demands far longer than any HSS alternative.
Works on wood & plastics too
The same open flute geometry that works on aluminum makes Aluma-Cut ideal for hardwood carving, composites, and rigid plastics where chip clearance is equally critical.
Wholesale direct pricing
Factory-direct from our USA facility — no distributor markup on specialty non-ferrous tooling.

Safety guidelines
Never use Aluma-Cut on steel or ferrous metals
Aluma-Cut geometry is designed for soft metals only. Using it on steel or iron destroys the open flute edges within seconds and generates unpredictable cutting behavior. Use double-cut or specialty cut styles for all ferrous applications.
Aluminum dust & fines are a fire hazard
Fine aluminum particles produced during grinding are highly flammable. Never allow aluminum grinding dust to accumulate — work in a well-ventilated area, avoid sparks near aluminum chip collections, and use proper dust management.
Full face shield & eye protection required
Aluminum and non-ferrous metal chips eject at high velocity during grinding. A full face shield is required for all Aluma-Cut operations — safety glasses alone are not sufficient coverage.
Check flutes regularly on long sessions
Even with Aluma-Cut geometry, very heavy cuts on aluminum can accumulate chips in the flutes over extended use. Stop periodically and inspect the flutes — clear any buildup before it compromises the cut quality or causes grabbing.
Secure aluminum workpieces firmly
Aluminum is light and can shift easily under lateral grinding forces. Always clamp aluminum workpieces securely before starting — an unsecured aluminum piece that moves under the burr creates instant loss of control.
Eye & hearing protection always
Wear safety glasses and hearing protection on all grinding operations regardless of material or duration.

Frequently asked questions
Why does my double-cut burr keep loading up and grabbing on aluminum?
Double-cut burrs have a fine, crosshatched flute geometry designed for hard metals. On aluminum, the soft ductile chips produced during cutting are too large and sticky to pass through those fine flutes — they pack in almost immediately, turning the burr into a smooth cylinder that rubs rather than cuts. The packed aluminum then causes sudden grabbing as the burr re-engages the work unevenly. Aluma-Cut solves this with wide, open, raked flutes that are physically too large to pack with aluminum chips — they shear the material and eject the chip continuously.
Can Aluma-Cut burrs be used on wood and plastic as well as aluminum?
Yes — the same open flute geometry that prevents chip packing on aluminum works equally well on hardwood, composites, and most rigid plastics. Hardwood carvers often prefer Aluma-Cut because the wide flutes clear wood fiber without burning or loading, giving a cleaner cut than double-cut burrs. On plastics, Aluma-Cut prevents the melting and smearing that fine-flute burrs cause on thermoplastics. It is not suitable for steel, iron, or hard ferrous metals.
What RPM should I use for Aluma-Cut burrs on aluminum?
Aluma-Cut burrs on aluminum generally perform best at slightly higher RPM than double-cut burrs on steel for the same head diameter. For a 1/4-inch head, 50,000 to 60,000 RPM is typical. For a 1/2-inch head, 25,000 to 35,000 RPM. The higher RPM helps the open flutes eject chips cleanly — too low an RPM on aluminum causes the chips to stick to the flute face. As always, reduce RPM as head diameter increases and never exceed your grinder manufacturer rated speed.
